Negative Thoughts

This self portrait was a TON of fun to do as well as being somewhat therapeutic. Additionally it's given me the idea of doing more expressive self portraits as well as asking some friends/acquaintances if they would pose for photos showing various expressions like disbelief, pleasure, rage, etc. oil on canvas board 14" X 11"

  1. Great self portrait! I am looking forward to seeing more of these.

There is another artist that has painted some wonderful, expressive portraits that you might be interested in. His name is Fred Bell and his blog is FredBelldailypainting.blogspot.com.

  2. I recognize you Todd, but I have never seen you look mad. Funny, you still look handsome, even though you are flipping out. I am completely impressed as always. I went through a period where I loved to take pictures of myself with a goofy face. Oh wait. That's always. haha.

  4. Thanks folks! (especially the bit about being handsome. One CAN dream- it's never too late!) I've taken a quick look at both of your suggestions, but I'm going to need more time to more carefully look them over.

  5. great portrait, Todd, love it. Not only the way youve realized the volumes (love the reflection on the forehead) but the way you have defined the negative space around the head with that black coat. Terrific.

  8. Thank you everyone!I'm planning to do more like this- using other people to give me exaggerated expressions, but so far even those willing to model have been a bit reserved.

  9. Ha ha! Brilliant! I love this and can't wait to see more...perhaps you should sneak up on your models, surprise them and quickly snap a pic of their expression. No chance of being reserved then ;o)
