Dug In

This painting will go to the winner of a competition held during the "Childhood Remembered" show at the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River. Many submitted photos of their special memories from their own or others' childhoods; the winning entry to be painted by me. It was a difficult decision on the juries' part. Now to dry and get framed by the end of the month. oil 11" X 14" NFS

3 Eggs and a Plate

Fortuately, the egg challenge doesn't have a finish date... Here are 3 more; 4 down and only 96 to go! oil on canvas board 5" X 7" $70 unframed

Spilled Egg

This is the start of my response to a challenge from Cathleen Rehfeld to paint 100 eggs. I haven't forgotten my own planned series of animated portraits, but I'm totally dissatisfied with my latest effort (which is partially why I haven't posted in a while. The other reasons: I have been too busy and too sick. [feeling better- I'm getting pretty sensitive to even Gamsol.]) 6" X 8" oil on canvas board $95 unframed

Sun Worship

Another in my series of portraits with exaggerated expressions. I'm not so very happy with this one (sorry C.)- it looks like I painted it from a photo (which of course I did). 16 X 12 oil NFS

Mirror Image

The title on this one has two meanings: it's a shot I took in the mirror and forgot to reverse in Photoshop, and it portrays the mirror image of my personality. (OK, I suppose a few might quibble with that.) This is the 2nd in a series I have in mind- it's been difficult to get volunteers to show exaggerated expressions AND catch them in good light. I'll be pretty busy during the next week or so- so probably nothing more for my blog for a couple of weeks. Those in the vicinity of Hood River are invited my artist's reception at The Gorge White House from 1-3pm on Sept. 5th. Also enjoy another group of my paintings during Sept. at Brian's Pourhouse while having one of their delectable dinners. 16" X 12" oil on canvas board.

Filtered Light

This is another from my series of nudes on display at the Columbia Art Gallery. Each painting (save one) is titled for the kind of light illuminating the subject. 14" X 11" oil on canvas. Available at the gallery.

Pool Light

This is one from my series of nudes at the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River, OR. I photographed my model almost 30 years ago and finally got around to painting this image a couple of months ago. I'm glad I waited because I think I did a bit better than I would have back then when the most I knew about oil was that most cars took about 4 quarts and it needed occasional changing. 12" X 16" oil on stretched canvas. SOLD

Taking Five

This is from a series of nudes of mine that are on display at the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River, OR. Please drop by if/when you're in the area. There's also the monthly show, which this month is a group of very fine photographs of the Gorge area. oil on canvas 14" X 11" Available at the gallery

Negative Thoughts

This self portrait was a TON of fun to do as well as being somewhat therapeutic. Additionally it's given me the idea of doing more expressive self portraits as well as asking some friends/acquaintances if they would pose for photos showing various expressions like disbelief, pleasure, rage, etc. oil on canvas board 14" X 11"

Mexican Restaurant

This restaurant is at the east end of The Dalles, OR. I think they've captured an authentic exuberant color scheme straight from Mexico. And...they've got a pretty good deal for lunch. $5 for your choice of several items guaranteed to hold you over until dinner. oil on canvas board 8" X 10" $160 unframed

Backyard Roses

Another small painting I'm saving for a September show. I've got a thriving Rose bush in my backyard that is left from previous owners; the flowers are small but profuse. My apologies for the glare- usually I'm fairly successful at limiting or eliminating glare, but not this time. oil on canvas board 8" X 6" NFS

Little Porkers

A couple of weeks ago, our Tuesday painting group was invited to a site on Underwood Mtn. in S. Washington. The farmers there are raising a dozen or so pigs. General opinion was that they "are sure cute". Naturally, I photographed them with the idea of painting them later. oil on stretched canvas 14" X 11" $300 unframed

Rack 'Em Up

OK, my last painting with cherries as the subject. I haven't been able to title this one creatively, so the end. Notice that I've changed the title at Celeste's suggestion. Thanks, Celeste! I've got a couple of other subjects waiting for their introduction. oil on canvas board 6" X 8"

Father's Pride

I'm interrupting my cherry series to post an image I just painted for a show I'll be in this October at the Columbia Art Gallery. Tentatively (I believe) it's called "Childhood Remembered". This scene is something I saw several years ago in Capitan's ( a SMALL town in NM) 4th of July parade. oil on canvas 14" X 11" NFS until the show

Cherry Bombs

Another pun. As I paint this series, I'm realizing that a big thing that attracts me to cherries as a subject, in contrast to the rich color and plump shapes, are the stems and the sinuous way they move through space. oil on canvas board. 6" X 8" Being held for an upcoming show. NFS

Above It All

My alternate title for this one was " A Cherry On Top". I've got a couple more coming before I'm done with cherries- at least for this season. oil on canvas board 8" X 6" Holding for a show NFS

Cherry Pile

With so many paintings of cherries in this season, it's difficult to be different. Sometimes you have to resort to puns. 8" X 6" oil on canvas board. Being held for a show. NFS

Local Berries

These berries didn't last too long after being painted. I don't know why, but locally grown strawberries seem more accessible this year than in the past. Perhaps because I've got a friend who grows some to sell; perhaps because there's a new Saturday market in The Dalles. 6" X 8" oil on board. Holding for a show. NFS

German Wine Jug

I haven't been painting much lately (other than plein air on Tuesdays and portraits on Fridays) and so this is another painting uncovered while rummaging through my stacks of old paintings. I like the colors, but I would sure move the tomato away from the edge if I were to paint this again. 8 X 10 oil on canvas $120 unframed

Marvin

Inspired by another blogging artist (and the imminent visit by my daughters), I cleaned up a bit in my studio and found this portrait done a few months ago at Friday portrait session. It's of my neighbor, a retired minister. His adornments are beads and trinkets acquired on a visit to New Orleans. oil on canvas 11 X 14 NFS

Discussion Group

I've always liked this one; the composition and the fact that it presents a little different view of windsurfers- not the usual image. 16 X20 oil on canvas SOLD

Derelict

I encountered this old home while driving through rural Oregon. I was attracted to the graphic image produced by the weathered surfaces and the exposed structure. Unanswered is the question of why someone invested in a new metal roof when the house was in this condition. Also, I've been experimenting with leaving some of the colored priming show through. This can be seen most clearly in the sky and roof. oil on canvas 11 X 14 $300 unframed

Under the Lyseloma

This 9 X 12 nude was shown and sold at the UNCLAD 2010 show held at the Gallery by the Bay in Washington. Another day I'll post the other one that sold.

Chicken Charlie's Island

This painting is of an island in the Columbia River unofficially known as "Chicken Charlie's Island" because Charlie once ran a chicken farm on it. He was reputedly something of a hermit. The island is a little to the east of Hood River, OR. oil on canvas $500 unframed

Lawrence Lake

Several months ago I visited Jack to photograph his antique car. While there, I saw these horses in a nearby field. I presume they belong to him. 12 X 16 oil on canvas Currently available at the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River, Or.

Hood River

This painting is totally out of sync with the season, but since my last post was a fall view, it seemed only appropriate to follow with this one. 12 X 16 oil on canvas $320 unframed

Crown of Glory

Fall is generally so beautiful in this area, little or no rain, sunny and cool, abundant color. The only downside is that winter is soon to follow. Of course, that can have it's own beauty. 16" X 12" oil on canvas. Now available at the Portland Art Museum Sales and Rental Gallery.
